The house is owned and administered by The Victoria League for Commonwealth Friendship. It is a residential house for students between the ages of 18-30 from all Commonwealth or former Commonwealth countries. The aim of the League is to provide a safe and friendly ‘home from home’ for young Commonwealth people who are undertaking full time studies.

The house is self-catering and the accommodation charges include the use of all facilities and equipment (except coin operated laundry facilities). There are splendid kitchens with toasters, conventional cooker, microwave ovens, lockers for individual supplies etc. There is a laundry room in the basement with coin operated washing machines and dryer at a very reasonable cost. Wireless internet is available in all rooms.

The building consists of four Victorian houses adapted and converted for the purpose, containing 24 single bedrooms 12 double bedrooms (twin beds) 3 double units (with separate kitchens) and 4 bed-sits (with cooking facilities). All bedrooms are fitted with vanity units and have study desks and a fridge. On each floor there are fully equipped kitchens, bathroom and/or shower room; in addition there are three showers in the basement area.

For short stay visitors there are two twin rooms in the basement.

Victoria League House, which is non-profit making is well maintained and kept in good decorative order. A preservation order protects the Victorian facade. Costs are kept as moderate as possible so as to be within the means of students.

On the ground floor there are two lounges each having large windows overlooking the gardens. The main lounge has french windows giving access to the terrace area which has attractive garden furniture; potted plants and flowers in season and a barbecue area. Beyond there is a large private garden for the use of residents.

The cost of maintaining the Student House grows every year. We have to constantly upgrade to continue to meet the stringent standards set by Westminster Council. This year the Council said that our night storage heating is no longer a suitable way of heating the house, mostly due to our ‘carbon footprint’ and that night storage heaters do not provide a constant temperature (though the house is never really cold).  They are asking the League to install gas central heating at a cost of (approximately £200,000) but the disruption let alone the cost would be horrendous.

There is also the option of installing secondary double glazing

We are negotiating with the Council with regard to the option of installing secondary double glazing, (approx £30,000.00) but as the house is a grade 2 listed building the League need to obtain planning permission.

Obviously due to the recession these are worrying times for everyone, it is important that we realise the benefits of the Student House. Since 1954 it has been providing a place of welcome and security for so many Commonwealth students, who talk passionately about the Victoria League, students feel so at home here, they know they will be looked after and will enjoy the social atmosphere created for them. The uniqueness of the  Student House in the ever increasing stressful time young people face in London gives them a feeling of having a base, some say it is their ‘London Home’ and they will never forget their time here.
