The Victoria League Student House is a residential house for students aged between 18 and 30 from the Commonwealth and former Commonwealth countries. It provides a safe and friendly ‘home from home’ for young students who are studying full time in London.
The House is situated in the Bayswater area of London near Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park. There are three tube stations (Bayswater, Queensway and Notting Hill Gate) and ten bus routes within a few minutes’ walk of the House. Leinster Square is a quiet square. In the near vicinity there is a wide range of shops, pubs, restaurants and cinemas. The three tube stations give easy communication to the West End, Heathrow Airport, the main railway termini and various college and university locations.
The House consists of 24 single bedrooms, 12 double bedrooms (twin beds), 3 double flats (with separate kitchens) and 4 bedsits (with cooking facilities and sinks). All bedrooms have study desks and fridges. On each floor there are kitchens, bathrooms or shower rooms. Also, there are three showers in the basement area. There are internet terminals for communal use on a pay-as-you-go basis. For short stay visitors there are two double bedrooms.
The House is self-catering. The weekly rent includes heating, electricity and bed linen. There are fully equipped kitchens with electric cookers, microwave ovens and lockers for individual food storage. In the basement there is a laundry room with coin operated washing machines and dryers.
On the ground floor, there are two large lounges overlooking the beautiful gardens. The main lounge has French windows leading out to a large terrace and barbecue area. Beyond this is the large private garden for use by all the Square's residents. The other lounge has a television for use by all the residents and a grand piano. During the year, students organise a variety of social events in the lounges; there is also a Welcome Party in October and a Christmas Party organised for the students. In the basement, there is a music practice room, TV room, recreation room and the laundry room. There is a No Smoking policy throughout the building.
The House is run on a non-profit making basis so the rents are very reasonable for Central London. There are currently 60 students from 14 Commonwealth countries living in the House. Most are living overseas for the first time. The aim of the Victoria League is to provide students with a happy and comfortable environment where they can progress with their studies and enjoy the range of opportunities London has to offer.
