Our Student House Student stories From VL Student House to the Summit "Adventure begins at the end of your comfort zone."It was Christmas break, and like every other night, we were just chilling in the basement of our student house when someone said, “Let’s go somewhere.” A quick scroll through maps, a few excited nods, and by the next day—we were in Cardiff, ready for an unplanned adventure. We stepped out of our Airbnb, greeted by the unmistakable sound of raindrops tapping against the pavement. The sky was a dull grey, and the debate began—should we chase waterfalls or conquer the trail to Pen y Fan? Some leaned towards the waterfalls, but the determined hikers in the group had other ideas. “We came for the trail—we do the trail!” And so, the decision was made. As we arrived at the starting point, the rain had eased, and we felt confident with our light packs—just some water, a few fruits, and our enthusiasm. But nature had other plans. With every step, the wind grew stronger. At first, it was refreshing, a cool breeze against our faces. But soon, it turned fierce, pushing against us, making every movement feel like a challenge. Then, the true test began. At certain points, the gusts were so strong that if we didn’t hold hands, we might have been swept off our feet—literally! And just before the final stretch of the climb, disaster struck—my glasses flew off my face, disappearing into the storm. I didn’t even get the chance to watch them go! The wind was wild. Water droplets weren’t falling; they were flying sideways, defying gravity. More and more hikers were descending, warning us: “It’s too windy up there! Don't try to go to summit” We glanced at each other. Were we really going to give up just 100 metres from the summit? That’s when the power of teamwork kicked in. We formed a chain, gripping each other’s hands tightly, pushing forward step by step. The wind howled around us, but we didn’t stop. And finally—we made it! The view? Well, let’s just say the clouds didn’t exactly reward us with a postcard-perfect scene. But the thrill of overcoming the challenge was unbeatable. Sure, we lost a few caps, my poor glasses, and a little bit of our energy—but we gained an unforgettable adventure and a new respect for the power of the wind. Manage Cookie Preferences
